Description
The Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 (I) was introduced in 1959 as the first lens released under the Summilux name, derived from the Latin summa lux, meaning maximum light. Since then, Summilux has become synonymous with high-speed Leica lenses featuring an aperture between f/1.4 and f/1.7.
The new interpretation of this legendary lens blends a classic vintage look with state-of-the-art technology, making it the fifth member of the Leica Classic Line. It joins:
Summaron-M 28 f/5.6
Thambar-M 90 f/2.2
Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH.
Summilux-M 35 f/1.4
Like its predecessors, the new Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 retains timeless aesthetics inspired by the original design.
Optical Performance & Modern Enhancements
The optical design is based on the Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 (II), an almost unchanged version that was produced from 1962 to 2004. This lens is renowned for its:
- Impressive image quality
- Unique rendering with soft bokeh at wide apertures (ideal for portrait photography)
- Sharper and higher-contrast images when stopped down, surpassing its predecessor
The new Summilux-M benefits from modern production techniques and advanced glass materials, ensuring it meets the high-resolution demands of modern Leica M-Cameras. Additionally, it offers an extended close focusing distance of 0.7m, providing more creative freedom.
Precision Craftsmanship
Like all M-System lenses, the new Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 proudly carries the "Made in Germany" label, embodying Leica’s commitment to excellence. Key design elements include:
- Handcrafted solid brass construction
- Premium round vintage lens hood
- Classic aesthetic with technical precision
- As the new standard lens in the Leica Classic Line, it seamlessly combines vintage charm with cutting-edge performance, making it a true icon for generations of photographers.
