Description
This latest offering from Cosina underscores the rapid convergence of still photography and videography. The large aperture ring has both click stops and a stepless mode for smooth transitions while filming in changing light. The F0.95 maximum aperture opens up new opportunities for available light photography and provides great control over depth of field. (In Micro 4/3, the depth of field of the 17.5mm Nokton at f/0.95 is equivalent to that of a 35mm lens at f/1.8 in the 135 format.)
Like its 25mm f/0.95 stablemate, the Voigtlander Nokton 17.5mm f/0.95 ASPH has clear depth-of-field and distance markings. The manual-focusing helicoid is smooth and precise. At 540 grams, this is no lightweight, but it will deliver images that are simply unattainable with other lenses. Recent Voigtlanderdesigns have employed aspherical elements to reduce aberrations, and this 17.5mm Nokton is using the same playbook. Expect to be rewarded with crisp images that capture the subtleties found in available light photography.
Cosina has emerged as an admired producer of top-quality optics. Their rangefinder lenses, SLR lenses and now, Micro Four Thirds lenses are prime examples of applying modern design and production techniques to offer a lineup of unprecedented ingenuity and quality.
